The Story Behind these Pouches
In the fall of 2018, we were out at Superstition Mountain Museum here in Arizona selling soaps at their fall craft fair. At the fair, my 12 year old daughter noticed a vendor who was selling placemat purses and zippered pouches - she was intrigued.
Since our booth was right next to this wonderful lady, who was in her 70's, we learned so much about how she started sewing. This beautiful lady had learned to sew via YouTube just 2 short years prior.
That next month, my 12 year old asked if I would be willing to teach her how to make zippered pouches on her own, using my home sewing machine. We spent a week cutting and sewing fabric, and within 2 weeks she was happily sewing up a storm on my Singer sewing machine. It was at that time she asked me if she could have a table at the next farmers market (April, 2019) with her sewn pouches.
I explained to her that she would need to have more than a few -- a goal of 100 pouches would be ideal for her to start. I mentioned that any pouches she sold would be money for her savings. I would keep track of her earnings and match that (as adults have a "match" with their 401K), provided she put the money in the bank.
She decided to make saving for a house down payment her 'goal'. These pouches are custom made by my oldest, named Wendy. They are fully functional, lined pouches that are completely washable.
Her hard work and efforts haven't been easy -- she broke lots of zippers, and got frustrated more than I can mention. But the key is that she persevered to finish a goal that she set out for herself.
